Physical Therapy & Sports Massage

So what is Physical Therapy?

Physical Therapy is a scientific form of assessment and treatment of musculo-skeletal dysfunction using a combination of hands-on techniques including massage and stretching. It's an effective form of treatment and prevention for a wide range of muscle related conditions.

If you have a question about a specific condition you can e-mail us here.

We include advance sports remedial therapy techniques such as:

  • Trigger Point Therapy
  • Myofascial release techniques
  • Pre and Post Event Sports Massage

Trigger Point Therapy

Treatment for painful, tender, tight and over sensitised areas. When pressure is applied or the muscle shortened, the trigger is reduced and immediate relief generally occurs. Blood flow is stimulated to the area assuring tissues of healthy oxygenated blood.

Myofascial Release Techniques

Myofascial release is used to evaluate and treat restrictions in the body's contractile connective tissues (muscles) and non-contractile supportive connective tissues (fascia) by the application of gentle traction, pressures and positioning. Fascia is a complex supportive web throughout the body affecting all components of the musculoskeletal, nervous and visceral (organ) systems. It surrounds groups of muscle fibres, and entire muscle groups and organs. While it is not contractile, it can be passively elastically deformed. That is how it retains tensions from physical and emotional traumas. It is also involved when a person suffers chronic pain or physical dysfunction. Chronically tense muscles restrict blood flow and fatigue the body. Both fascia and muscle tissues can become shortened if they are improperly used. As well, layers of fascia can stick together.

Myofascial release techniques are used to coax muscles in spasm to relax, and break adhesions in the fascia. Bodies respond to these therapies by releasing tension that has been stored in the fascia, thus allowing more functional flexibility and mobility of the muscles, fascia and associated structures.

Pre-/Post Event Sports Massage

Sports massage therapy is used not only by top athletes, but by most people interested in sports and fitness. The benefits of fitness maintenance and quick recovery from injury can now be taken advantage at both national and local level. Sports massage is a speciality within the field of massage therapy that focuses specifically on assisting the training process, preventing injury and aiding the healing process when injury occurs. Both the occasional athlete and the serious athlete can encounter soreness and injury, making this form of massage beneficial no matter how athletic a person is.

Everyone from soccer mams and dads to marathon runners can benefit and use a sports massage. It can assist an athlete in all phases of competition reducing soreness and fatigue during the training process, giving a head start before the competition and speeding the recovery period after the event.

Pre-match: Before the game/run/cycle you need a quick treatment that will be an adjunct to your warm-up, to increase your circulation and flexibility, and leave your muscles resilient and ready to go.

Post-match: After a hard session you need a massage that will increase your circulation to speed the removal of fatigue toxins, relieve your muscle spasms and prevent soreness.

Fine-tuning: For regular fine-tuning you need a massage that will search out the areas of biomechanical stress in your muscles and relieve them, before they become problems, enabling you to train harder and more consistently.

Injury Rehabilitation: For Injury Rehabilitation you need a massage that will speed your healing, increase your range of motion and reduce scar tissue to allow the muscle to expand/contract normally.
